The deal closed June 22. For $266 million, ECARX acquired DreamSmart's entire Flyme software business: Flyme Auto OS, its cross-device sibling Flyme OS, and everything underneath. More than 2 million vehicles are already running it.

That installed base matters as much as the acquisition price. Rather than assembling patchwork solutions from multiple vendors, ECARX can now offer OEM partners a single hardware-software roadmap, cutting integration complexity and compressing development timelines. For manufacturers chasing competitive software-defined vehicle programs, that kind of simplicity commands a premium.

Ziyu Shen, Founder and CEO of ECARX, called it a turning point. "Securing the rights to the full Flyme software stack is a defining moment for ECARX's software-defined vehicle vision," he said. "This acquisition aligns our hardware and software roadmaps, and delivers a proprietary end-to-end operating system to sharpen our competitive positioning with global OEMs."

Beyond strategic alignment, the financial logic is compelling. Owning Flyme opens software licensing and connected-car monetization channels that pure hardware suppliers cannot access through conventional models. As vehicle fleets grow and over-the-air update cycles lengthen, those recurring revenue streams compound. Hardware margins don't.

Asia Pacific's software-defined vehicle race is accelerating fast, and ECARX just moved to the front of it. With millions of vehicles already running Flyme and a growing OEM client list, the company now holds foundational assets for global competition well into the next decade.
